Check out his review of his university: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? James:There is no need for a car if you plan on staying on the campus at Texas Christian University (TCU). In order to get to stores, it may be a good idea to have one (although you will likely have one or two friends who have a car that you could borrow). I have a bike, and I use it to get to Kroger and Walgreens. Those two stores have all of my essentials. There is bus transportation, although I do not find it to be helpful. In short, I would suggest getting a bike; it is cheaper, yet still allows you to be mobile. You can always pitch in for gas money with a friend who takes you to Target once a month. VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? James:I chose Texas Christian University based on the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants being so inviting. I have never had a problem with office hours, and I even go in at other times (and I am able to find the professor). I find the professors to be inviting of questions. They are there to see you succeed, and they will not stop helping you until you do. The faculty at TCU is wonderful. They have welcoming arms open to anyone who comes their way. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? James:The dorms are in tip-top shape, with each only being a few years old. There is one food court on campus, which is annoying. It is in central campus, which makes it easy to get to regardless of where you might be. Being in Texas, it is warm year-round. Going to classes, I always see people I know and others who I have never seen before. People are very nice to one another, much like the professors. It is that southern hospitality each student possesses. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? James:Texas Christian University is known for its business school. It has been ranked highly among other great schools. We are also known for our nursing school. Both of these programs are challenging, and they are accompanied by knowledgeable professors. I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering. This has been my choice ever since I was young. I chose TCU because there are only about 50 students in my engineering classes, making the classroom setting small. The professors get to know you very well due to such a small class size. I have found TCU to be very good at coaching me for the real world once I graduate. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? James:Greek life does play a significant role at Texas Christian University. However, with Frog Camp and Freshman Orientation, TCU does a phenomenal job at helping incoming freshmen find peers (both in their class and upper classes). I did not rush my freshman year, and I was able to find a group of friends that I enjoyed being around. You will find your group early on, and you will probably keep those same friends all four years (but you are not limited to only those friends you meet freshman year). VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? James:I visit the Career Center at least twice a month. They do a great job at letting the students know who is hiring. They host two campus-wide career fairs a year that hundreds of companies attend. Through FrogJobs, students are able to look up jobs both on-campus and off-campus, both for now and for the future. My resume looks golden thanks to the help of Career Services. They take their job seriously, and they make sure to get the name of Texas Christian University out to the big employers. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? James:The library is very crowded. Taking this into consideration, Texas Christian University is expanding the library, which will be ready in the fall of 2015. Although the library is always packed, there are plenty of other study areas (both in dorms and other academic halls) that are unused and are open to studying. No matter your preferred studying environment, you can duplicate that on campus to help lead you to success. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? James:Fort Worth is about 15 minutes by car from campus. Besides the bars, the city shuts down fairly early (around 10:00 p.m. or so). There is not much to do in downtown Fort Worth. Dallas is about an hour by car (or by train). Dallas is a much bigger metropolitan area, thus giving students more options for things to do. If you were to draw a two-mile radius around campus, you have all your necessities: clothes shops, burger joints, pizza places, grocery stores, convenience stores, etc. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? James:I picked Texas Christian University due to its medium size. TCU has about 8,000 undergraduates. I am pleased with the general class size, and I feel like TCU can comfortably hold this volume of students. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. James: I joined a club in December of 2013 called TCU Idea Factory. This is an entrepreneurial club. Typically, schools will have a text alert system you can sign up for where you will receive a text message from the school any time an unsafe situation has arisen on campus. Similarly, this is often offered via Twitter, Facebook, and email as well. At this point, theyre pretty much making it as easy as possible for you to be aware of possible dangers in your area, so why wouldnt you sign up? However, signing up isnt usually the difficult part for students its taking the alerts seriously that tends to be the challenge. It is in our nature to joke and assume such things are being dramatized. In this case, though, give the alerts the attention they deserve. These are the kinds of situations that should not be taken lightly so it is best just to give the school some credit and be careful. Be thankful that you are able to get such a quick heads-up. Check your locks: Particularly for dorm residents, locking the door doesnt seem like such a big deal. With all of the easy socializing going on so close to you and the reassurance of so many R.A.s around, its not surprising that keeping the door locked isnt a top priority. You certainly arent expected to keep it locked all the time and isolate yourself from your floormates, but locking it at night and during less busy times of the day is something you must remember to do. Even if it doesnt seem necessary, it cant hurt. Why not take such an easy step to protect yourself? If you live off-campus, this is even more important. No matter how distracted you get, no matter how tired you are, no matter how safe you feel always lock the door behind you. Additionally, double-check that your windows are closed when you leave and when you go to sleep. College campuses have a comforting feeling about them that lead you to believe friendly students like yourself are the only people around, but tha t is unfortunately not always true. Assume that other, potentially dangerous strangers are out there and avoid keeping your residence too widely open and accessible. Here are a few tips that may help you adjust to dorm lifethat you may want to check out as well. Know where local safety resources are and how to use them: Take some time to research what kind of support the university does offer in emergency situations. Many schools have Emergency poles lit up around campus that include a phone that can be used to immediately call the campus police. It would be extremely helpful to not only know where those are, but how they work also. Being near such a resource but not knowing how to use it would be quite upsetting in the case of an emergency. In addition to specifically emergency-related resources, look into some of the simpler things your campus might offer. For instance, bigger colleges tend to have a bus route and/or night shuttles. Most   phrasal verbs in English can be easily substituted by a more formal verb (made up =constructed or assembled or built).So lets get started and review some useful phrasal verbs with OVER.TO TALK (IT) OVERThe more formal verb is  to discuss. To talk something over  is to discuss it between two or more people.Example: Mary wanted to go somewhere exotic for her holidays but James preferred to go to the family cottage by the sea. They said they would talk it over later that evening after dinner.TO TAKE OVERThe more formal verb is to control or to acquire  (to buy), to win control of something.Example: Hillary was tired driving she had been driving non stop for 4 hours. Philip said he would drive the rest of the journey so he took over the driving. OrCompany A wanted to become bigger. The easiest way was to buy its compe titor. They met the management to discuss an over and the take over  began. Please note We can also use takeover as a noun. A takeover of company B has taken place. Pay attention to its different structure. It is one word not two! TO PULL OVERThe formal verb could be to stop.  In the previous phrasal verb  (take over)  we gave the example of Philip taking over the driving from Hillary.Example: When Philip agreed to take over the driving he asked her to pull over when it was safe to do so and stop the car. To pull over  means to stop the car somewhere safe either to rest or change drivers or get something from the car boot.TO HAND OVERA more formal way to express this is to say  to give  or to present. We hand over  something we have or are holding to someone else who requests it. Sometimes it is used quite harshly.Example: A robbery took place in the bank yesterday and thieves  (robbers)  demanded to hand over  all the cash immediately. Please note Again pullover is also a noun which is a style of jumper worn by males or females. And gain as a noun it is one word only. TO SLEEP OVERTo stay or spend a night in a friend’s house. This phrasal verb is usually used by young children who like to spend time with their friends. One child invites the other to come to his home and have a sleepover  (here it is a noun, one word).Example: Would you like to sleep over  in my house tonight? Mum is making popcorn and said we can watch a movie.TO RUN OVERThis has two meanings as a phrasal verb so could be replaced by  to kill  (run over an animal, for example)  or to review  (run over some numbers or a presentation).Example: When someone is driving along the street and a dog or cat runs out on to the road they might unintentionally (not deliberately) run over and kill the animal. Trying to avoid the animal could cause an accident. OrExample: Your colleague might ask you to help him with some work and would like you to review his presentation that he is giving the following day. He might ask you to kindly run over the presentation with him and see if everything h as been included.TO STOP OVERto stay somewhere briefly during ones journeyExample: On our way to Paris, we stopped over in Strasbourg for one night. Seeking Distance Why Conservatives are Cutting Ties with an Anti-Tax Pledge Photo from Flickr.com by Tax Credits But this influential pledge is beginning to lose considerable backing within conservative circles.  It has recently come to light that politicians who, in addition to Norquist, could best be described as conservative have begun to distance themselves from this promise. So far, individuals who have denounced it include Senators  Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Saxby Chambliss, and Bob Corker. Among the others are Representatives  Peter King and Chris Gibson, and, perhaps most notably, Speaker of the House John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.  Sen. Corker informed  constituents  that he was “not obligated on the pledge.” Meanwhile, Sen. Chambliss confidently told a Georgia news station that “I care a lot more about my countryâ€" I care a lot more about it than I do about Grover Norquist.” It should be noted that the influence and credibility these particular politicians have in the Republican party cannot be overstated. These men are not only revered in their own party, but also among Americans who take a conservative approach to politics. So why are these individuals, who all signed the pledge with enthusiasm upon entering office, retracting their statement to never raise taxes?  The reason for this is intimately linked to the upcoming Republican fiscal cliff compromise. Politicians from both sides of the aisle are furiously seeking a solution to this ever-pressing fiscal issue, and conservatives are focusing on a plan to raise tax revenue by eliminating potential deductions as well as closing possible tax loopholes. But how is this plan connected to Grover Norquist? Under his strict rules as they are laid out in the pledge, these seemingly small modifications to the tax system count as a tax increase. Therefore, they are to remain absolutely forbidden. A Senate aide who asked not to be named recently stated that although Republicans and Democrats often take different approaches to taxation, Norquist remains totally isolated in considering the elimination of tax credits to be a tax increasethe pledge just doesnt reflect the reality of how tax policy works. It appears that this anti-tax activist is beginning to lose his considerable influence, even among people who share most of his ideologies. As Rep. Peter King of New York recently told NBC’s Meet the Press, “the world has changed, and the economic situation is different.” Perhaps it is time for everyone to realize that what worked in 1986 may not work today, and that seemingly immobile economic ideas must be altered to fit the current fiscal climate. Tapping into language learning while you sleep The idea of using the 7+ hours a night of sleep time to subliminally study isn’t new, but recent research shows that there may be more value in our down time after all, specifically when it comes to learning a new language. A team of Swiss psychologists from the Swiss National Science Foundation performed a study to learn whether listening to a foreign language while you sleep will boost your ability to learn. Their findings suggest that the answer is yes, because it helps resurrect memories and experiences from your learning process.To test their theory, psychologists involved 60 German-speaking volunteers in their study of whether listening to verbal cues while sleeping improves a learner’s vocabulary. Participants were given a number of Dutch words for the first time around 10 pm. Shortly thereafter, half of the participants were asked to go to sleep, and while they slept the new words were played back to them. The other half stayed up to listen to the words as they were playe d back to them. At 2 am, the two test groups reconvened in order to be tested on the words. The group that was asked to go to sleep could recall the German definition for each Dutch word more easily than those that were kept awake. The playback actually had no effect on the group that was asked to stay awake. The research team concluded that verbal cueing while awake failed to improve memory.To rule out sleep deprivation as the reason for the sleeping group’s greater success rate, the research team took Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, which record the brain's spontaneous electrical activity over a short period of time, in order to measure the volunteers’ brain activity as they listened to the playback of the words while they slept. The recordings revealed obvious activity in the brain’s parietal lobe, which is responsible for processing language and sensory information. Theta oscillations, a type of EEG feedback, were also recorded, and these are associated with memor y encoding when people are awake. Researchers concluded that these findings suggest that the same brain activity can occur even while we’re sleeping, which can help strengthen memories.If you’re a teacher who’s just been placed abroad and you’re looking for ways to learn some of the local language more quickly, integrating more audio into your sleep might be a good way to get a head start. Relistening to language podcasts while you sleep could prove helpful. You can also combine some advice from one of our previous blogs with these research findings and use the time you take to get some shuteye to also listen to music in the local language.
